Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

The most popular and reliable destination for gorilla trekking in Uganda. Located in southwestern Uganda, it's renowned for its dense rainforest, rich biodiversity, and the highest number of habituated gorilla families in the country.

Golden Monkey in Mgahinga Gorilla Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Uganda’s smallest national park, but it offers a truly exclusive and scenic gorilla trekking experience. It lies within the Virunga Mountain Range, bordering Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

What to Expect on a Gorilla Trek

Gorilla trekking is a guided adventure through dense tropical rainforests. The trek can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the location of the gorillas. You will hike through forests, cross streams, and climb hills as you search for a gorilla family.

All our safaris usually start from Kampala or Kigali, taking you deep into remote forest habitats where these rare animals live.

No matter how long the trek takes, the moment you meet the gorillas is unforgettable. Watching them feed, play, and interact in the wild is a truly emotional and rewarding experience.

Gorilla Trekking Day Experience

A typical gorilla trekking day starts early in the morning with a briefing at the park headquarters. Visitors are then grouped and assigned to specific habituated gorilla families.

Park rangers provide important guidelines, often called “gorilla rules,” to ensure safety and conservation. These rules help protect gorillas from human diseases and reduce stress caused by daily visits.

The trek itself is unpredictable. In places like Bwindi, the terrain is dense and more challenging, while in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, the terrain is slightly easier but can still be demanding, especially for groups located on higher slopes like Mount Karisimbi.

Weather conditions can also change quickly, and gorillas may move to higher areas in search of food. However, experienced rangers and porters are always available to assist and ensure you complete your trek safely.

Time with the Gorillas

Once you find the gorilla family, you are allowed to spend one hour with them. This limited time helps protect the gorillas from stress and disease while still giving visitors a meaningful experience.

During this time, you can observe their behavior, take photos, and enjoy a close connection with nature. At the end of the trek, you will often receive a certificate as a memory of your gorilla trekking adventure.

Why Gorilla Trekking is a Must-Do Experience

Gorilla trekking is one of the most exciting and emotional wildlife experiences in the world. It offers a rare chance to see endangered animals up close while supporting conservation efforts.

This adventure is not just a safari—it is a life-changing journey into the heart of Africa’s wild beauty.

What is the best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda?

Gorilla trekking is possible year-round, but the dry seasons (June–September and December–February) are considered the best times to visit. During these months, trails are less slippery, visibility is better, and trekking conditions are more comfortable.

However, the wet seasons (March–May and October–November) offer their own charm — the forests are greener, crowds are fewer, and photography is spectacular. If you don’t mind a little rain, this can be an excellent time to visit and sometimes even secure better lodge rates.

What to Expect During a Gorilla Trek in Uganda

A typical gorilla trek begins early in the morning at the park headquarters, where you’ll attend a briefing session about safety, rules, and gorilla behavior. Rangers then assign groups of a maximum of eight visitors to one habituated gorilla family.

The trek itself can take anywhere from 30 minutes to over 6 hours, depending on where the gorillas nested the previous night. You’ll follow trackers through thick vegetation, muddy trails, and steep hills — but the reward is extraordinary.

When you finally find the gorilla family, you’re allowed one unforgettable hour in their presence. You might see mothers nursing infants, juveniles playing in the trees, or a dominant silverback keeping watch over his group. Cameras click, hearts race, and silence fills the forest as you realize you’re witnessing one of nature’s greatest spectacles.

Gorilla Trekking Permits in Uganda

A gorilla trekking permit is required for each visitor and is issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

  • Cost: USD 800 per person per trek (as of 2025).
  • Booking: You can secure permits directly through UWA or via a licensed tour operator.
  • Group Size: Only 8 visitors are allowed per gorilla family per day to minimize stress on the animals.
  • Age Limit: Minimum age is 15 years.
  • Gorilla Habituation Experience: A special permit costs USD 1,500, allowing up to 4 hours with a semi-habituated family in Bwindi’s Rushaga sector.

Because gorilla trekking is in high demand and permits are limited, it’s strongly recommended to book 3–6 months in advance, especially during the peak dry seasons.
